
Each year, Let's Play Hockey Magazine recognizes several awards in hockey. Youth, high school, and college aged players receive various awards and this section celbrates the winners. Click on each award to see who has won the latest honors and who the leading candidates or finalists are during the season.
The Verbero Hat Trick/Playmaker Wall for youth players who have recorded hat tricks or 3 assists during a game. Goaltenders are recognized with the Carroll Goalie School/Brian's Shutout Wall for goalies who delivered a shutout for their team.
The Patrick Schoonover Award is awarded in honor of Patrick Schoonover who passed away while playing in a hockey game for the Eastview Bantam AA team on November 14th, 2014. On the Patrick Schoonover Award, Minnesota Wild Chief Operating Officer Matt Majka said, “We are proud to support the Patrick Schoonover Award to honor his legacy as a hockey player who displayed great character as a teammate on and off the ice. It’s a meaningful way that we can pay tribute to Patrick’s life and recognize other players who are making a positive impact in the State of Hockey.”
“On the ice for his Eastview Bantam AA team, Patrick Schoonover was a leader, defender, and excellent teammate. Off the ice, he was a leader, defender, excellent friend, loving brother and son. In recognition of the way he led his life, Let’s Play Hockey and the Minnesota Wild are proud to present the Annual Patrick Schoonover Award, given to the Minnesota PeeWee or Bantam hockey player who best exemplifies Patrick’s ideals of hard work, high character, loyalty, honesty, humor and athletic achievement.” – Patrick Schoonover Award description
A pair of highschool hockey awards are recognized including the girls high school hockey Senior Goalie of the Year. Each year Ms. Hockey is awarded to the outstanding senior girls high school hockey player. The Reed Larson Award goes to the outstanding senior defensemen in boys high school hockey.
In college hockey the Mike Richter Award is given to college hockey's outsanding goaltender. The following criteria is used to determine the winner as selected by a committee of coaches, scouts, and members of the media:
- Candidates must display outstanding skills on the ice
- Candidates should be in good academic standing at an NCAA college or university
- Consideration should be given to academic achievement and sportsmanship
- Candidates must comply with all NCAA rules; be full-time students at an NCAA college or university; and complete 50 percent or more of the season
- Consideration should be given to the candidate’s activities in the community
